Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments from captain Ben Stokes about the dressing room not being "weak men".

Stokes delivered this message in several interviews following England's loss in the second match of the Ashes series against the Australians previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had let his sentiment to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I required," remarked Stokes.

But, after the opener scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "weak men" comment subsequent to England were beaten in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The team afterwards went on a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach McCullum had remained in line with their prior three years in charge.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this game."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday came during a decisive triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England six down for 207 chasing a daunting target of 435.

Consequently, the home team require four wickets on the last day to move to an insurmountable three-nil advantage with three Tests.

A loss would prolong England's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes series defeat.

This series will be completed in only eleven days of cricket – with England losing the first two Tests in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a very, very good side. It was always going to be hard touring here to face them. They entered as the front-runners and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures questions about his immediate future in the England team, Pope looks under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in England's second knock on Saturday, extending his modest returns versus Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

However, Crawley insisted any notion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said he. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is noise externally. There's no discussion like that regarding Pope in the camp," he concluded.
